Tumi Portfolio Briefcase

Tumi 'T-Tech Forge - Bethlehem' Portfolio Briefcase
I like the colour of this handsome bag from Tumi. The ‘T-Tech Forge – Bethlehem’ is a portfolio-style briefcase crafted from durable ballistic nylon, complemented with distressed leather trim and antiqued brass hardware. I don’t see the vintage aesthetic they mention in their brief but it’s just the right mix of utilitarian and fashion to suit my tastes. for a vintage-inspired, utilitarian aesthetic. The interior and exterior of the bag feature the usual number of organizational pockets and flaps, none of which I ever use.

Martin Maison Briefcase

Martin Maison Briefcase
Martin Maison Briefcase
For your old school documents or your iPad this briefcase is made in Tuscany utilizing ‘special’ artisanal techniques. Features a sheepskin inner elastic for documents and pens, a zip closure, detachable shoulder belt and a rather high price. Might work well with a large laptop. Beautiful but best to be seen in person (they have locations in Taipei and Hong Kong).

Sunforger Painter Bag

 South2 West8 Painters Bag
Lovely utility bag made from traditional boat cover cloth. Fabric like this is usually characterized by a high count cotton army duck with compounds for greater water repellency and mildew resistance. Fantastic material for Asian weather. Huge bag with a large pocket at the front, leather loops and metal hardware. Classic.
The whole South2 West8 catalogue kills me.

Steve Mono Leather Bags

Steve Mono leather bags
I love these leather bags from Spanish designer Steve Mono. They exude quality. Pictured above is his Dennis Briefcase, Arthur Briefcase, Thomas briefcase with bandolier and the Adam school briefcase. The Dennis is my favorite.
From his description:

Shapes, materials, finishings,… are inspired by classic, easy and cool pieces I´ve seen many times in vintage photos, books or movies; that kind of briefcases and wallets that men used to take to their works in offices buildings, and also reminding that school boy-man look.
Bags, briefcases, wallets, umbrellas, belts,… thinking of that kind of men wearing always suit, jackets and tie, with their polished shoes and those bags and briefcases in their hands, where they take all they need for the day. Basic but quality and personal pieces.
Made in Spain; working personally with a small manufacturer, and taking care in every moment of the work process: vegetal tanning, cut, sew, clean, label, pack,…everything controlled to offer a personal and intimate product you can feel as specially made for you.
Advise: Women use, and like, to steal their men bags.

Rocket Bag by Bill Amberg

Rocket Bag by Bill Amberg
I love the contrast between the aluminum handle with the vegetable tanned leather in this briefcase by Bill Amberg. The Rocket Bag is large enough to hold your laptop and other daily office essentials, has internal pocketing for a mobile phone and wallet, and a padded base to help protect the internals from accidental drops. It’s gorgeous now but the leather is only going to look better as it develops its own patina and character over time.

Sam’s Garage Briefcases

Sam's Garage Briefcases
Sam’s Garage briefcases, an “ode to the luggage designers of the 50s and 60s,” are made with bent plywood with silkscreened graphics applied to the sides and fronts. The shape reminds me of suitcases from that period while the materials bring back memories of uncomfortable classroom desks of my youth. A not entirely positive memory but those desks looked better and last longer than their contemporary substitutes.
A case like this deserves to carry something more than a change of clothes or your days work; a traveling cocktail bar?

The Churchill Gentleman’s Attaché Case

The Churchill Gentleman's Attaché Case
Some quick notes on a perfectly executed classic. The Churchill Gentleman’s Attaché Case mixes clean lines with old-school British sensibility. Handmade in Cambridge of hand-finished English bridle leather and a frame of steel, it features: eight individually sculpted and hand-sewn leather components, ensuring comfort and longevity; hand cast brass hardware and locks; and internal pockets that accommodate a variety of business documents, stationery and business cards. Perfect detailing and craftsmanship — it doesn’t get better than this.

Hideo Wakamatsu Attache Backpack

wakamatsu1.jpg
A popular style of bag, at least for those who are carrying a Lenovo laptop. I’ve seen them everywhere lately.

This 3-way (handgrip, shoulder-strap, backpack) attache features backpack straps that can be deployed during your commute or trip through the airport, and stowed when you arrive at your office or meeting. High-tech hollow-threaded Japanese nylon reduces weight, increases durability, and has a shimmery look. Hideo takes advantage of the low weight to add lots of features and pockets that would be prohibitively heavy if done in a lower grade of nylon.

Calder Airlift for MacBook AIr

calder.jpg
Calder make professional cases for guitar and violin so they have a thorough understand of what it means to protect and transport your investment. In addition to guitar and violin the also make laptop cases which feature a leather exterior, carbon fiber shell and suspension system, and a hand painted silk velvet lining. Recently Calder introduced the AirLift for MacBook Air, which seems ideally suited to a product like the MacBook, though with a weight of 4lbs the case negates the one of the advantages of having such an attractive laptop. They do marry well together and these cases certainly are beautiful. More photos after the jump.

BBP Hybrid Laptop Bag

bbp1.jpg
I can’t believe I missed this one. The bbp Biz collection are a hybrid bag that can be a backpack, messenger bag, or even a briefcase and looks conservative enough to take anywhere. If conservative and understanted are not your thing – and black can be a bore – they have a multitude of other styles and colours. The bbp Biz collection has all the features you would expect from a bag of this class: tons of pockets, top loading compartment, padded compartment for your laptop, luggage handle bit so you can attach to your wheeled luggage, and a useful umbrella holder. Of note is their Bak2Pak carrying system which evenly distributes weight to reduce strain on your shoulders and back. The bag conveniently converts from dual strap to single strap or the strap can be removed entirely to carry like a briefcase. I’ll be covering bbp bags in the future. Another picture after the jump.

Luis Shoulder Bag

luisbag.jpg
Very bold and aggressive design for this shoulder bag by Argentinean Perfectos Dragones. “The design of this unisex bag repeats an X-shape in leather over an aluminum core to form an innovative pattern. Made of leather, aluminum, and fabric.” $125.00US from the MoMAstore.
