Australian company Shuka has taken the manilla envelope concept, introduced with the MacBook Air, to a new level with it’s leather sleeve for the 15″ Unibody MacBook. Looks beautifully crafted and I love the contrast between the red latch and the leather body.
Not everyone has shoulders made of steel, nor lightweight netbooks, so well designed bags like Sherpani’s Rolling Flite bag help ease the pain of those long hikes around expansive airport terminals. Very iconic design. I’m not a big fan of the green but I tend to be fairly conservative when it comes to such things. I do like the handles, wheels, and that they have made the effort to use recycled materials.

Simplicity seems to be the key word in bags lately. While I am unsure about the color, the modern space age styling and innovative fabrics make for a unique and attractive line of bags. Featuring water, dirt, and smell resistant NanoSphere fabric by Schoeller Textiles of Switzerland, the new Incase EO Collection includes messenger, duffel, and overnight bags. Add a laptop sleeve and their neat modular accessory pouches and you have all the bags you might need for casual travel.
I like the simple styling of this cotton canvas messenger bag from Nuo. This bag features a wide adjustable shoulder strap, lots of pockets for the various work and personal items you carry about, and importantly it really light. The color suits me as does the price. Nuo’s laptop sleeves look great as well.

A popular style of bag, at least for those who are carrying a Lenovo laptop. I’ve seen them everywhere lately.
This 3-way (handgrip, shoulder-strap, backpack) attache features backpack straps that can be deployed during your commute or trip through the airport, and stowed when you arrive at your office or meeting. High-tech hollow-threaded Japanese nylon reduces weight, increases durability, and has a shimmery look. Hideo takes advantage of the low weight to add lots of features and pockets that would be prohibitively heavy if done in a lower grade of nylon.
It has been over a year since I shared a bag find from the catalogue of Clark & Mayfield. At that time they were introducing a new men’s line and I still think their Mapleton Laptop bag is one of the nicer business briefs out there.
Their Quimby Rolling Laptop Tote has a beautiful quilted exterior complimented with leather trim and gold hardware. The nylon body and rubber coating on the bottom should keep the bag looking great for years. It should also help with clean ups the next time you drag your bag through a mud puddle as you race to grab a taxi. The interior has plenty of organizing pockets and folders, and it will fit most laptops in the 17″ range.
While I generally don’t like wheeled luggage of any kind, I feel it inhibits my mobility, my wife recently reminded me that not everyone can walk for hours with a heavy laptop on their back (or shoulder). She also complained that I don’t write enough about products that might interest women. I’m going to change that with the help of some new friends of the next month.
Lauri Delaczay started Clark & Mayfield with her husband Barry to simplify life by providing truly functional, yet fashionable bags to use everyday from home to work and school. Their belief is that functional products need not be unattractive, something I think we can all agree with.
Here are a few other notable bags from their catalogue:
Rosemont Leather Laptop Tote
Stafford Leather Rolling
Quimby Quited Laptop Brief
17″ Quimby Rolling Laptop Tote
The Wirkin Carpet Bag by Victoria London puts some style, attitude, and fun into a functional classic. My wife loves the vintage carpet bag fabric and the leather top and bottom. My favorite part is the well thought out interior pockets which are roomy and help keep you organized. Whip out the removable laptop sleeve and you have in a pinch an overnight bag. Four colors for your carrying pleasure.
You see a lot of branded editions of Headliner’s excellent Stashpack series of gig bags all with their own unique twist to a classic design.
This exclusive Ableton-branded edition of Headliner’s Stashpack series is limited to 100 pieces, each individually numbered. The Stashpack is tailored out of weather- and tear-resistant ballistic nylon with lockable YKK zippers inside and out. The fur-lined, padded compartment accommodates 12″ to 17″ laptops. The main compartment is perfect for transporting a controller, extra vinyl, MIDI keyboard or clothes. Use the individual padded pockets for headphones, needles, external hard drives and more. Unique to the Stashpack are the Velcro cable straps that help organize your USB, RCA and XLR cables.
Another excellent Porter bag. Sturdy Nylon padded bag for your 15″ MacBook Pro. The padding should keep your gear safe while the fleece with keep your MacBook scratch free and warm in winter. The Gingham print is a nice departure from the more common matte black.
This bag is big; big enough to carry your new 17″ MacBook pro and your daily essentials. Though designed for women I’d describe the sheenko as handsome and smart with just enough flair to show some individuality. A bit like a gray flannel suit complimented by a bright scarf or tire. The sheenko has functional exterior front pockets, a multitude of internal pockets and accessory holders, padded shoulder strap and metal bottom feet. Details which make for more than a stylish bag but an extremely functional one as well.
The Knomo Bungo Expandable Laptop Messenger Bag is sophisticated and sleek without being overstated. It’s the perfect compliment for the smart dressed professional who prefers the convenience of a messenger to a brief. But a bag that looks this good is going to compliment almost any style, even the jeans and t-shirt attire I wear 7 days a week. The inside of the bag features a padded section for your laptop and a roomy main compartment for your books and gadgets. The compartment is zippered and can expand if you need some extra space. The leather flap and side panels are complemented with durable nylon. I love that the leather flap is secured with hidden magnets – no more velcro or fumbling with clasps. The Knomo Bungo comes in brown and black, both colors in a 15.4” and a 17” size.

That was fast! Tom Bihn is offering nine backpacks, briefcases, and messenger bags to fit Apple’s new 17″ aluminum MacBook Pro, including the Checkpoint Flyer pictured above.
The Checkpoint Flyer is the only airport “checkpoint friendly” laptop bag designed in sizes specifically for Apple laptops. The TSA requires that all passengers traveling with a laptop must remove their laptop from their bag and place it in a bin for screening. The Checkpoint Flyer is the result of a TSA design challenge to design a bag that offers airport security x-ray screeners a clear view of the laptop while it is still inside of the bag. With the Checkpoint flyer you can send your laptop through the x-ray machine while still inside its protective laptop case. Far more convenient than shlepping everything in and out of your bags. There are others who produce bags that do the same but I find Tom Bihn bags to hold up extremely well to the rigors of travel while not being a target themselves for theft.

North Face bags are known for their high quality, design, and ability to withstand all the extremes that weather and travel place upon them. This daypack is no different and should be perfect for your urban and travel experiences. It features a main compartment designed to carry your laptop, laminated back panel with breathable mesh, a small stash pocket in the front, and my favorite ykk #10 zippers.
