Though only 23, Malaysian born singer-songwriter, guitarist, Zee Avi possesses a musical voice greater than many twice her age.
With an eclectic pool of influences that range from such eccentrics as Cat Power, Regina Spektor, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Jolie Holland, Daniel Johnston and Chris Garneau, to jazz greats Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, to classics like Velvet Underground and Led Zeppelin, this self-described “rock lover at heart” captures the dark, bittersweet qualities of romance with a crack left open for hope and optimism.
An artist blazing a trail as a poster child for how the internet can transform music, Zee was discovered and signed by label Brushfire Records after months of recording her songs on her webcam and posting them on YouTube (she tells her story here).
Zee Avi‘s music is a perfect antidote to an uninspired Friday morning, helping me get in the right frame of mind for a productive afternoon. She is one of the few new music talents to catch my attention in years, what a wonderful talent.
